The Most Singular Fact about the Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!

For me, the most remarkable fact associated with the Fourth of July is that a group of Enlightenment men in a cultural backwater of the Western world conceived a document that has not only inspired countless millions of people of all races and creeds but that also has served as a charter that has enabled this indispensable nation to renew itself time and again — and in ways that the framers of this document could have scarcely conceived almost a quarter of a millennium ago.
